USWNT Closes 2025 with Strong 2-0 Victory Over Italy
Catarina Macario and Jaedyn Shaw score in the first half, securing the USWNT's fourth consecutive win to end the year.
The U.S. women’s national soccer team (USWNT) ended the year on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Italy on Monday, marking their fourth consecutive win. This match showcased the improvements made since head coach Emma Hayes embarked on a year-long experimentation phase in preparation for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Catarina Macario opened the scoring in the 20th minute, receiving an excellent pass from Lily Yohannes before executing a curled shot into the net. The USWNT doubled their lead in the 41st minute through Jaedyn Shaw, who benefited from a pinpoint assist by Alyssa Thompson.
Despite having fewer shot opportunities compared to their previous encounter, the USWNT maintained control throughout the match. The expected goals for the USWNT stood at 1.44, their second-lowest total of the year, while Italy struggled, registering just 0.31 expected goals.
Looking forward, the USWNT will face Paraguay on January 24, continuing their path toward the upcoming Concacaf W Championship in November, which will serve as the qualifying event for the 2027 World Cup.
The USWNT’s Evolving Roster
Both Macario and Shaw are examples of how young talent is stepping up within the USWNT structure, demonstrating strong performances at both club and national levels. The depth available for Hayes appears promising as she cycles through various player combinations, ensuring competition remains fierce for starting spots.
In her tenure, Hayes has utilized 50 different players in matches, broadening the talent pool for the national team.
Hayes’ leadership has transformed the structure of the USWNT, creating a robust foundation leading into future tournaments.
