Heisman Trophy 2025 Insights: Fernando Mendoza and Julian Sayin Emerge as Leading Contenders
A close look at the Heisman Trophy frontrunners as the conference championship games approach, featuring Indiana's Fernando Mendoza and Ohio State's Julian Sayin.
According to the bookies, the race for the Heisman Trophy has been narrowed to three standout players. Indiana’s quarterback Fernando Mendoza is currently the top favorite at +115. He is closely followed by Julian Sayin, Ohio State’s quarterback at +140, and Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia at +300.
After those top contenders, Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love sits at a distant +1000.
Barring any major upsets, one of the three—Mendoza, Sayin, or Pavia—will likely lift the coveted Heisman Trophy on December 13.

Favorites
Fernando Mendoza, Indiana QB (+115)
In a year where no one truly established dominance, Mendoza has consistently performed well. Since Indiana crushed Illinois 63-10 on September 20, he has been a favored candidate.
Arguments can be made for both Sayin and Pavia; however, I believe Mendoza will ultimately take the Heisman trophy. He has set a remarkable season record, throwing 32 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions, leading Indiana to an undefeated season. Moreover, the transformation of Indiana’s football program under coach Curt Cignetti is an inspiring narrative that could catch voters’ eyes.
Julian Sayin, Ohio State QB (+140)
There’s a strong case for Sayin, who started as a somewhat unrecognized player before throwing for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns, leading Ohio State to an undefeated record.
Sayin needed a standout performance against Michigan to solidify his chances for the Heisman, and while he threw for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns, it wasn’t enough to establish a defining moment like Mendoza’s impressive display against Penn State.
Ultimately, it is a razor-thin race with Mendoza and Sayin at the front.
Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt QB (+300)
Pavia has made significant contributions that almost pushed Vanderbilt to College Football Playoff contention. His unique style garners favor, especially following a touchdown celebration referenced as the Heisman pose against Tennessee.
However, losses to Alabama and Texas may hinder his chances. Worst-case scenario, he’ll likely end up finishing in third place, though an invitation to New York City seems assured.
