After just ten games, the Pittsburgh Steelers and veteran cornerback Darius Slay have mutually agreed to part ways, according to ESPN. The Steelers have reportedly filled Slay’s roster spot with Asante Samuel Jr., who made his season debut during Pittsburgh’s Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
A six-time Pro Bowler, Slay was part of the Steelers’ revamped secondary, which also included the acquisition of seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey. However, due to injuries and inconsistent performances, Slay lost his starting job to James Pierre prior to Pittsburgh’s Week 12 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Slay’s release follows recent comments from Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who said that when healthy, Slay would retain a starting position. Hours before parting ways with Slay, Tomlin indicated that the decision to have him as a healthy scratch in the previous game was largely about giving Samuel an opportunity to play.
Moving forward, the Steelers will need to make additional adjustments to their secondary as they prepare to face Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
