Travis Hunter's Position Unveiled for the Upcoming NFL Combine
The Colorado star's dual-threat capability raises questions about his role in the NFL as he prepares for the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine.
On Thursday, the NFL announced the full list of prospects who are invited to the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. The list features 329 names, but the question remains: where do we categorize Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy-winning star?
For the combine, he will be evaluated as a defensive back. In his 2024 season at Colorado, he played 713 offensive snaps alongside 748 defensive snaps. As a standout player in this draft class, there is ongoing discourse about whether Hunter should take the role of a wide receiver or stick to cornerback in the NFL. While he will likely still see action on both sides, it seems improbable that he will be a full-time starter in both positions like he was at Boulder.
Regardless of the position he takes on, Hunter possesses the talent to shine. He garnered the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award last season with 36 total tackles, 11 passes defended, and four interceptions, while also winning the Biletnikoff Award following 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. Notably, Hunter departs college as the sole player in FBS history to have at least 10 touchdown catches and five interceptions.
The intensity with which draft prospects are scrutinized in Indianapolis makes Hunter’s classification as a defensive back significant. This may indicate his new position moving forward. For CBS Sports’ latest mock drafts, click here.
