Guardiola Reflects on City's Near Catastrophe After Narrow Win Over Fulham
Manchester City almost squandered a commanding lead against Fulham, scraping a 5-4 victory after leading 5-1.
LONDON – Over the past four months, Manchester City has noticeably altered their style of play, aiming for an optimal performance from Erling Haaland. Their dominance was showcased during a thrilling match against Fulham, where they led 5-1. However, they had to withstand a fierce comeback from Fulham, ultimately securing a tight 5-4 victory.
Initially, City dominated, exploiting their lead thanks to effective plays from Haaland and teammates. Yet, after an unexpected resurgence from Fulham, highlighted by an impressive long-range shot from Alex Iwobi and several goals from Samuel Chukwueze, they were forced to fight until the very end. Guardiola noted, “We went so deep to defend the crosses. We have to occupy the spaces a bit better.”
Despite Fulham’s late attempts to equalize, City managed to hold on to their lead, giving Guardiola a much-needed victory as they close in on league leaders Arsenal. He lamented the need for his team to regain their composure and manage leads more effectively, echoing a sentiment he expressed after previous matches against Leeds. Guardiola’s acknowledgment of their current struggles hints that while the team has the potential, they need to adapt to their new dynamics for future matches.
