2026 World Cup Draw: The Impact of Erling Haaland on Norway's Fate

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Norway's Erling Haaland is expected to shape the tournament's toughest group.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will showcase 48 nations, marking a milestone for the tournament which has spanned 96 years. This expansion means more balanced talent distribution across 12 groups.

Nevertheless, one group will stand out as the notorious “Group of Death”, particularly if Erling Haaland and Norway are drawn together. Norway completed the UEFA World Cup qualifiers flawlessly (8 wins, 0 draws, 0 losses), yet will enter the draw as a Pot 3 team, due to their FIFA ranking of 29.

Landon Donovan remarked on the situation during FOX Sports’ coverage:
“They’re far superior to a Pot 3 team. They’re not a Pot 1, but definitely a strong Pot 2 team. This form has only recently emerged, so it hasn’t been reflected in their ranking yet.”

Norway’s powerhouse, Erling Haaland, stands tall at 6'5" and ended World Cup qualifying with 16 goals, equalling the record for the most goals in a single qualifying campaign, previously held by Poland’s Robert Lewandowski.

Landon Donovan further stated:
“Facing a talent like that is a nightmare. You get isolated in a one-on-one; it could be disastrous.”

Beyond Haaland, Norway possesses a roster celebrated as the nation’s ‘Golden Generation’. Cobi Jones has praised players like Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb, noting their exceptional dribbling skills, alongside Martin Ødegaard and his remarkable left foot.
