Following the draw of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martínez, spoke about the crucial role of Cristiano Ronaldo, the team’s captain and a celebrated forward, as the summer tournament approaches.
At 40, Ronaldo is set to participate in his sixth World Cup, scheduled to be held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Portugal will face Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K, with the fourth team determined in March 2026.
Martínez highlighted Ronaldo’s commitment and competitive spirit in the wake of the announcement, stating, “What can I say about our captain is that this is somebody that’s an example towards the game. Someone where age doesn’t diminish the drive to remain at the top and inspire the younger generation.”
As soccer’s premier tournament nears, Ronaldo aims to conclude his international career with a memorable performance, having scored 8 goals and provided 2 assists in previous World Cup matches.

Ronaldo’s involvement in the upcoming games was initially uncertain following a red card and a three-game ban after a qualifying incident against Ireland. However, FIFA has deferred two games of his suspension for a one-year probation period, allowing him to securely lead Portugal into the World Cup.
