The groupings for the upcoming 2026 World Cup are now set, with the U.S. being placed in Group D alongside Australia and Paraguay. The fourth team will be determined through a playoff involving Turkey, Slovakia, Kosovo, or Romania. Shaquille O’Neal was responsible for drawing Australia’s name.
Pochettino, participating in the draw in Washington, stressed the importance of not falling into overconfidence as they prepare for competitive matches.
“We need to build our journey step by step,” he remarked during the FOX broadcast. “We have to treat every game as if it’s the World Cup final.”
This approach highlights the serious mindset needed as the U.S. enters the competition aiming to excel against their opponents, particularly considering formidable teams like Turkey and Slovakia could be vying to join their group.
“Our aim is to outperform Paraguay and Australia; it won’t be an easy task,” Pochettino cautioned.
Fans are largely satisfied with the draw, having avoided more challenging matches against top-tier nations.
“That’s the wrong mindset,” he concluded. “We must believe, aim high, and prepare to claim victory in the World Cup.”
