
Elden Campbell, Former NBA Star, Passes Away at 57 in Drowning Accident
Elden Campbell, who played 15 seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the Pistons, has died at the age of 57 from an accidental drowning.
Elden Campbell, an NBA champion known for his impressive career, tragically passed away at the age of 57. The former player, who won a title with the Detroit Pistons, died in a drowning incident on December 1, as confirmed by Thomas Steinkamp, the chief of investigative services in Broward County, who stated the passing was accidental.
Campbell was a significant figure in basketball, spending nine years with the Los Angeles Lakers among his other teams. He was the 27th pick in the 1990 NBA draft and became a vital player, contributing 15 points per game during the 1996-97 season alongside stars like Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.
He also had a remarkable collegiate career, becoming Clemson’s all-time leading scorer. Earlier, Coach Cliff Ellis reflected on Campbell’s contributions to their only ACC title in 1990.
NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson expressed his condolences and shared fond memories of Campbell on social media, highlighting his athletic skills and tender character. Various friends and former teammates, including Cedric Ceballos, have also shared their grief over his passing. Campbell was an inductee into the Southern California Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025.
