College Football Playoff Odds Favor Notre Dame and Alabama Over Miami for At-Large Bids
As the College Football Playoff nears, betting odds reveal the favorites for the final at-large spots, highlighting Notre Dame's strong position against Alabama and Miami.
With less than a day until the unveiling of the 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP), betting odds make it evident who the contenders are for the final at-large spots. Notre Dame is prominently favored at -1050 to secure a spot, followed closely by Alabama at -320 and Miami at +164.
Texas is a distant long shot at +2500, reflecting a likely exclusion come Sunday afternoon. These odds were accurate as of 9:50 p.m. ET on Saturday according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Entering the final weekend, up to two at-large bids might be available as many teams are sidelined during the conference championship week, leaving only a few to plead their case to the committee.
BYU, needing to overcome Texas Tech in the Big 12 title game, aimed for automatic qualification to the CFP but fell short with a 34-7 defeat. This marks their second loss to Texas Tech this season, complicating their at-large bid chances.
In the most recent CFP rankings, Alabama has climbed to the No. 9 spot, outperforming Notre Dame, BYU, and Miami. Miami’s earlier 27-24 victory over Notre Dame brought considerable discussion, yet Notre Dame maintained a higher position in the rankings, boasting a 10-game winning streak.
Contenders for a CFP At-Large Bid:
- Miami (10-2): Started strong at 5-0 but faltered with losses to Louisville and SMU. Despite winning the last four games, the Hurricanes couldn’t clinch a spot in the ACC championship due to tiebreakers.
- Notre Dame (10-2): Following losses to Miami and Texas A&M, they finished strong, winning ten consecutive games against notable opponents like Boise State, USC, and Pitt. They are aiming for a second consecutive CFP appearance.
- Alabama (10-3): They risk being the first three-loss team in CFP history to receive an at-large bid despite losing to Georgia in the SEC championship. They are attempting to achieve their first CFP berth post-Nick Saban era.
