BYU Coach Kalani Sitake Advocates for Fair Playoff Selection After Championship Setback

Kalani Sitake praises Texas Tech as the premier team following BYU's playoff dreams dashed post the Big 12 Championship Game.

No. 11 BYU saw their College Football Playoff aspirations vanish with Saturday afternoon’s 34-7 defeat against No. 4 Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship. This loss left the Cougars at a record of 11-2, having suffered both setbacks against the Red Raiders, losing by a tally of 63-14 across two matchups.

Post-game, BYU coach Kalani Sitake described Texas Tech as “the best team in the country” on multiple occasions while addressing reporters after the game, expressing doubts about his team’s postseason chances but pushing for an equitable selection process.

“They’re (Texas Tech) the No. 1 team in the country,” Sitake remarked. “I don’t know the other rankings. This team is really good… I would love another shot.”

He also commented, “I just hope they make it fair for everyone, and at least include us in the graphic if they can; that would be nice.”

Texas Tech’s coach Joey McGuire supported Sitake’s stance, highlighting the Cougars’ strong season despite two losses to ranked opponents, noting they deserve consideration.

“Whenever the selection committee starts comparing teams, I believe the Big 12 should have two teams in the playoffs. BYU’s 11-2 record coupled with their performance against the No. 4 team reflects their caliber despite the defeats,” McGuire stated.
