The highly anticipated Curry-Ionescu 3-point shooting contest will not take place this year

The 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend won't feature the anticipated rematch between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu.

The anticipated rematch between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu will not take place at the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend.

The NBA confirmed that the highly awaited 3-point shooting event featuring these two stars—a major highlight from the previous year’s festivities in Indianapolis—will not be included in this year’s lineup in San Francisco.

Negotiations occurred over several weeks in hopes of organizing a rematch, especially given that All-Star weekend will occur on Curry’s home court. Ionescu, a Bay Area native, had been eager to meet her idol, Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors.

NBA spokesman Mike Bass mentioned, “We weren’t able to land on a plan we thought would raise the bar off of last year’s special moment. We all agreed not to proceed and will instead keep the focus on All-Star Sunday’s new format.”

Curry had previously expressed his desire for the rematch and there were discussions about a 2-on-2 format this year that could have included Klay Thompson, Curry’s former teammate, alongside Caitlin Clark, reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year. However, these talks seemed to have collapse in recent weeks, despite the NBA’s hopes of incorporating some form of the Curry vs. Ionescu competition.

Ionescu previously stated, “We’ve been talking about finding different ways to change this up next year. I think he has a partner in mind that’s going to join him. So, I’m open to any partner that could help me win and take that belt from him.”

Curry triumphed over Ionescu 29-26 in last season’s inaugural gender-inclusive shooting contest, which also raised funds for their respective foundations.
