The SEC announced its comprehensive schedule for 2026 on Thursday, unveiling what promises to be an exciting shift in league play. With the transition from an eight-game to a nine-game conference schedule, fans can expect a total of 72 thrilling matchups throughout the season.
This increased number of games will undoubtedly intensify the competition, especially as teams can now face up to five playoff games. Such a change signifies a major victory for season-ticket holders and fans, ensuring a year full of significant contests.
In addition, each SEC school will face at least one opponent from the Power Four conferences or the fighting Irish from Notre Dame every season. This new format will see SEC teams competing in ten games against top-tier opponents throughout 2026 and onwards.
The 2024 season already saw the welcome of the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns from the Big 12, which also heralded the end of the traditional divisional setup within the SEC. Games that previously occurred annually may now only happen twice in four years due to this restructuring.
