Michigan Expands Investigation into Athletic Department Following Sherrone Moore's Dismissal

Michigan's board has authorized a deeper investigation into the athletic department regarding the circumstances surrounding the firing of Sherrone Moore.

This week, Michigan’s board of regents has authorized a law firm to extend its investigation into the athletic department’s management of the Sherrone Moore situation, according to a reliable source who requested anonymity due to the delicate nature of the inquiry.

The law firm Jenner & Block is leading what has been described as an “open-ended” examination of the department. Moore was dismissed with cause after evidence of an inappropriate relationship emerged during a meeting with athletics director Warde Manuel Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after his firing, Moore was arrested for allegedly breaking into a female staff member’s home and making threats to harm himself with sharp objects, as per the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office and local police.

The investigation follows a letter from university president Domenico Grasso urging anyone with relevant information about Moore to reach out to Jenner & Block. In the letter, Grasso stated, “This breach of trust by coach Moore is painful for many in our community… our swift and decisive action reflects the university’s staunch commitment to a campus culture of respect, integrity and accountability.”

Moore was formally charged with felony home invasion, along with misdemeanor charges of stalking and breaking and entering. He is currently out on a $25,000 bond, under specific conditions including mental health treatment and GPS monitoring. A judge has ordered him to refrain from contacting the alleged victim.

Moore is scheduled to appear in court on January 22 for a probable cause conference. His record as head coach was 16-8. Following his firing, interim head coach Biff Poggi has been appointed while the university searches for a permanent replacement.

Michigan (9-3) is set to compete against Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
