Victor Wembanyama Set to Return for NBA Cup Semifinals Against Thunder After Month of Recovery

Victor Wembanyama is anticipated to come back in the NBA Cup semifinals versus the Thunder after missing nearly a month due to a calf strain.

Victor Wembanyama is expected to make his return on Saturday night for the NBA Cup semifinals against the Thunder after nearly a month of absence due to a calf strain, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. This return is crucial for the Spurs as they have managed to stay competitive without their franchise player and are poised to receive significant reinforcements as they face the formidable Thunder.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson hinted at Wembanyama’s return when he spoke to reporters this past Wednesday, stating, “Very much so,” regarding Wembanyama’s potential comeback on Saturday. He mentioned, “He had a very good day today. He had a good intent day this morning and we’ll have to see how he responds tomorrow.”

Final clearance will occur post Spurs practice on Friday; as long as everything goes smoothly, Wembanyama’s return seems likely. He had initially aimed to return against the Lakers in the NBA Cup quarterfinals, but both he and the Spurs felt it necessary to prioritize further rest and rehabilitation for a Saturday debut.

Wembanyama suffered the calf strain on November 14, and despite the risk it posed, the Spurs went 9-3 without him. They currently sit fifth in the Western Conference and now welcome back a player who began the season with impressive averages of 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, four assists, 3.6 blocks, and 1.1 steals over the first 12 games. He was considered a top candidate for both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year; however, now that he has missed numerous games, his eligibility for honors like these and All-NBA team selections could be at stake due to the league’s 65-game minimum.

Wembanyama can only afford to miss five more games to maintain his candidacy for awards, a challenge for the Spurs with 58 games left. Nonetheless, his return enhances the Spurs’ competitiveness, which they’ve demonstrated in recent wins without him.

The consistent growth of Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox during Wembanyama’s absence has also played a key role in keeping San Antonio steady in a competitive league. With Wembanyama back, the Spurs’ mettle will be tested against the Thunder, a true gauge to establish their standing against the reigning champions.
