Sophia Wilson Remains with Portland Thorns for 2026 Season

USWNT forward Sophia Wilson, exercising a unique contract option, will stay with the Portland Thorns for the 2026 NWSL season. This decision reinforces her commitment to the team after taking time off for maternity leave.

U.S. women’s national team and Portland Thorns forward Sophia Wilson will remain in the Pacific Northwest for the 2026 NWSL season after exercising a record-setting option reportedly worth $1 million. She had earlier signed a two-year deal in 2024 that included a unique player option, deviating from traditional club options. This decision comes after taking a break from the field due to maternity leave.

“Coming back to Portland is so special to me because Portland is where I started my professional career and where I’ve grown up in a lot of ways. I’m excited for the city. I love living here. I love the people here. I’m excited to get back with everyone and play in Providence Park and to play in front of the Riveters. There’s no place like it. That is the place to play and I’m excited to be back in it,” Wilson expressed in a club statement.

She welcomed her daughter, Gianna, in September, further highlighting the significance of her return.

Wilson’s influence has escalated since her 2019 draft, being the main goal scorer for her team since 2021 and a vital player for the USWNT, particularly contributing to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The announcement of her continued presence in the league sends a strong financial message, as her contract sets a new benchmark for player compensation.

As the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup approaches on February 20, Wilson’s focus will be on her return to competitive play after her hiatus.
