Sophia Wilson to Continue with Portland Thorns for 2026 After Exercising Record Player Option
The USWNT forward Sophia Wilson confirms her return to Portland Thorns for the 2026 season, following a successful two-year deal.
Sophia Wilson, a forward with the U.S. women’s national team and Portland Thorns, is set to remain with the Thorns for the 2026 NWSL season after exercising a record-setting player option reportedly valued at $1 million. Wilson had previously signed a two-year deal in 2024 with this player option, marking a first in contract negotiations in the league.
“Coming back to Portland is so special to me because Portland is where I started my professional career and where I’ve grown up in a lot of ways. I’m excited for the city. I love living here. I love the people here. I’m excited to get back with everyone and play in Providence Park and to play in front of the Riveters. There’s no place like it. That is the place to play and I’m excited to be back in it,” said Wilson in a club statement.
Wilson took the 2025 season off for maternity leave after welcoming her daughter, Gianna, in September.
Wilson’s Impact and League Significance Her deal sets a new financial benchmark and contrasts the ongoing contract negotiations of her teammate Trinity Rodman. Wilson’s scoring abilities have made her a key player since being drafted in 2019. The Thorns view her return not just as a homecoming but as a significant roster enhancement.
Jeff Agoos stated, “We are thrilled to have a world-class player like Sophia continue to call Portland her home. Sophia is an exceptional global star that can change the game in an instant.”
The new contract option places Wilson at the forefront of discussions regarding player compensation in the NWSL. Wilson’s last game was in the 2024 NWSL playoffs against Gotham FC. The league’s competition kicks off with the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup on February 20, followed by the regular season on March 13.
