A spectacular scorpion kick from Lizbeth Ovalle, who holds the title of the most expensive player in women’s soccer, alongside a long-range overhead shot from Santiago Montiel, won them the FIFA awards for last season’s best goals.
Both players scored their goals with their backs to the net, as fans selected Ovalle for the Marta Award and Montiel for the Puskas Award.
Ovalle scored with a remarkable heel flick while in the air, facing away from the goal during her match in the Mexican league for Tigres against Guadalajara.
Ovalle’s Goal
The women’s award commemorates the Brazilian soccer legend Marta, who is now teammates with Ovalle at Orlando Pride. Marta also won the award last year and had a goal nominated for this year’s edition.
Known as Jacquie, Ovalle made headlines in August for her record transfer fee of $1.5 million from Tigres to join the Pride.
On the other hand, Montiel scored for Independiente during a match in Argentina’s Primera Division against Independiente Rivadavia. He executed an impressive jump from about 22 yards out to strike a bouncing ball following a defender’s clearance from a corner.
FIFA is hosting its annual Best Awards at a private dinner in Doha, coinciding with the Paris Saint-Germain match against Flamengo in the Intercontinental Cup on Wednesday.
The awards for the top player and coach in both men’s and women’s soccer are set to be announced shortly.
