The Ohio Bobcats have announced the dismissal of first-year head coach Brian Smith for cause after placing him on administrative leave earlier in December. This decision comes after allegations of serious professional misconduct were reported, including claims of extramarital affairs, with one involving a graduate student, and alcohol consumption on the job. University President Lori Stewart Gonzalez expressed that Smith’s actions have brought “disrepute, scandal and ridicule” to the institution.
In his statement, Smith’s attorney, Rex Elliott, vehemently disputes the reasons for the termination, stating that his client is shocked and vehemently contests the claims laid out against him.
John Hauser, the defensive coordinator, has been named interim coach to lead the team for an upcoming bowl game on December 23 against UNLV. Smith’s interim role began last year when Tim Albin transitioned to the Charlotte 49ers. Before joining Ohio, Smith was the offensive coordinator at Hawaii and Washington State.
