Overview
The NWSL’s inaugural combine took place in Bradenton, Florida, marking an important development for collegiate soccer players aiming to transition to professional ranks. This event serves as a foundational step following the elimination of the college draft last year.
The Event
As Christmas music played lightly in the background, collegiate soccer players gathered for high-performance drills on the IMG Academy fields, encouraged by one another and aware of NWSL scouts watching intently.
With 45 players from various NCAA programs invited, the combine is designed to showcase their skills while providing teams with significant insights into potential signings.
“We were adding players until probably 48 hours from the start,” Thompson noted. “Literally.”
The event’s goal is clear—to facilitate the transition to professional soccer for prospects, while also aiming to enhance the scouting process and create a supportive environment for female athletes and coaches.
Insights from Leaders
Thompson highlighted the increasing importance of scouting beyond the ‘Power Four’ Division I schools, emphasizing the hidden talents that can be found across various programs, including junior colleges and smaller institutions. “Talent exists throughout the country,” she affirmed.
Conclusion
The combine serves as an essential element of the NWSL’s ongoing evolution, setting up better pathways for young athletes, revitalizing interest in women’s soccer, and laying the groundwork for future growth in the sport.
