Chelsea's Search for a New Manager: Candidates to Replace Enzo Maresca

With Enzo Maresca's departure, Chelsea eyes candidates including Liam Rosenior and Filipe Luis amidst their search for a new head coach.

It’s uncommon for a Premier League position to open at the start of the year with a club still competing in the Champions League and vying for a top-four finish, yet Chelsea has seen anything but normalcy over recent seasons. After clinching the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last year, manager Enzo Maresca has left the club by mutual consent, creating an opening at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are poised to search for their seventh manager since 2020, including interim managers, with several candidates already lined up.

Liam Rosenior, Strasbourg

As part of the BlueCo network that has supplied players to Chelsea, the French club is a natural consideration for the next steps of the Blues. Rosenior, currently managing Strasbourg, is regarded as a leading candidate for the role, according to The Athletic. His connection with Chelsea prospects is enhanced by their operational ties to the French club. Having a player-turned-manager like Rosenior could facilitate a swift transition, despite questions about whether he is ready for such a high-pressure role.

Filipe Luis, Flamengo

Currently thriving in his inaugural managerial role at Flamengo, Filipe Luis has achieved success with the league and the Copa Libertadores title in 2025. His playing experience in Europe, particularly at Atletico Madrid, and his ability to communicate with talents like Jorginho could allow him to manage Chelsea well. His coaching style aligns with Chelsea’s possession-based football under Maresca.

Cesc Fabregas, Como

As Como strives for Champions League qualification, it seems inevitable that Fabregas could move to a substantially larger club. Previously linked with Inter Milan, the former Chelsea midfielder is a prominent name among potential candidates, though his commitment to Como might hinder his transit mid-season. Given Chelsea’s urgency, waiting on a candidate’s availability could prove precarious.

Frank Lampard, Coventry

Lampard’s name inevitably resurfaces in discussions about Chelsea managers, having served in this role twice before since 2019. He is currently making strides with Coventry City, and while unlikely, a return to Chelsea remains conceivable as they weigh their options.

Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace

Glasner has quickly ascended in managerial circles with Crystal Palace, having garnered a European title with Eintracht Frankfurt. He showcases flexibility in adapting his tactics based on player availability and opposition, thus becoming another plausible option for Chelsea as they navigate their managerial search.
