Congo Requests NBA to Sever Ties with Rwanda Amidst Rising Conflict

The Democratic Republic of the Congo urges the NBA to distance itself from Rwanda, highlighting the deepening conflict and previous ties.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has requested that the NBA, along with Formula 1 and various major European soccer clubs, such as Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain, halt their dealings with Rwanda in light of escalating conflict between the countries. Rwanda has significant ties with the NBA’s Basketball Africa League (BAL), having hosted the inaugural season and the first four BAL Finals in 2021.

The DRC’s Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner recently sent a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver urging him to reflect on the league’s ‘commitment to social justice and respect for human rights.’ The letter emphasized the need to sever ties with Rwanda ‘in solidarity with the innocent victims of Rwandan aggression.’

The United Nations raised concerns just weeks ago about the surge in violence in eastern Congo as Rwandan-backed M23 rebels expanded their influences in the region, highlighting a situation that has persisted for decades.

The NBA has previously indicated compliance with U.S. government approvals to operate in Rwanda. In response to Kayikwamba Wagner’s correspondence, a league spokesperson reiterated their intent to adhere to U.S. regulations.

This is not the first inquiry regarding the NBA’s association with Rwanda and its leader, Paul Kagame, who faces accusations of human rights violations. U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn and Jeff Merkley had previously expressed concerns about the NBA prioritizing profits over principles.

This year’s BAL Finals are set to occur in Pretoria, South Africa, while the 2025 season kicks off in Rabat, Morocco. DRC’s keen interest in changing the NBA’s direction showcases how sports and politics intertwine amidst regional conflicts.
