Kansas City’s Marvin Menzies Dismissed as Coach Following Disappointing Season

Marvin Menzies's coaching tenure with the Kansas City Roos ends amid a struggling season, marking the first major coaching change in college basketball for 2026.

In the first major move of the 2026 college basketball season, Marvin Menzies has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Kansas City Roos. The announcement came after a disappointing 4-14 start to the season, which sees Kansas City struggling in the Summit League.

Menzies’s tenure included a disappointing record of 44-71 overall, with this season potentially shaping up to be the worst in the program’s history. Athletic Director Brandon Martin stated that the search for Menzies’s successor would begin immediately, even as he continues to coach through the remainder of the season.

The Roos had previously faced challenges after cutting ties with Billy Donlon after a more promising 19-12 record just a few seasons back. Menzies’s early dismissal reflects a broader trend in college basketball where coaching decisions often occur behind closed doors, ahead of official announcements.

As the season progresses, the coaching landscape for mid-major teams will continue to evolve, as many are expected to follow suit with changes in leadership.
