Forward Josh Sargent is nearing a transfer to MLS’ Toronto FC after a four-and-a-half-year stint in England with Norwich City. This move could be significant as the competition for spots in the U.S. men’s national team’s World Cup roster intensifies.
Toronto has reportedly made an $18 million bid for Sargent’s services, with negotiations currently in progress. Sargent opted out of the Canaries’ 5-1 victory against Walsall in the FA Cup, as he focuses on the transfer process.
Manager Philippe Clement stated, “Josh sent me a message saying he would not be available because of transfer considerations. This is not ideal and will have consequences for the club, but we’ve made it clear he won’t leave in this transfer window.”
Previously, Sargent was courted by Wolfsburg over the summer but declined the transfer. At Norwich, he has accumulated 56 goals in 156 matches since joining from Werder Bremen, with a notable performance last season.
Sargent’s World Cup Chances
In recent years, Sargent has been a regular for the USMNT, although injuries to his ankle have affected his availability. He has not scored for the national team since 2019, enduring a goalless run at the 2022 World Cup. Under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, Sargent has started twice, but opportunities have been sparse.
As the World Cup nears, the forward’s place within the team remains uncertain, especially with others like Folarin Balogun, Haji Wright, and Ricardo Pepi being favored. After Pepi’s injury may potentially open a spot, Sargent’s move to MLS could provide him with a fresh start and renewed opportunity.
