Ricardo Pepi, a key striker for the United States men’s national team (USMNT), has sustained a forearm fracture during a match with PSV against Excelsior. This incident occurred in the 26th minute, leading to his withdrawal from the game. The injury raises questions about his availability for the upcoming March international matches against Portugal and Belgium, which are critical as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.
PSV confirmed that Pepi, aged 23, will undergo surgery and is expected to be out of action for approximately two months. Considering that the World Cup is just 152 days away, any long-term injuries could severely impact players like Pepi who are eager to compete.
Pepi had recently been enjoying a good run, scoring in five consecutive Eredivisie matches, and was establishing himself as the number two striker for the USMNT behind Folarin Balogun. His solid performance includes 11 goals and two assists in 22 appearances across all competitions.
Despite his current form, Pepi’s last goal for the national team came in November 2024, and he will need to demonstrate his dexterity and contribution in the upcoming games to secure his place at the World Cup. His struggle with injuries in the past, particularly his disappointing transfer to FC Augsburg that led to him missing the 2022 World Cup, adds to the stakes of his recovery.
