Cristiano Ronaldo is willing to consider playing in the lowest professional league to achieve 1,000 competitive goals, according to Nani, his former teammate at Manchester United. However, there is no expectation for him to pursue this route, as he continues to perform exceptionally for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League and is anticipated to participate in Euro 2028.
GOAT Status: Ronaldo’s Remarkable Record
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has proclaimed that the 2026 World Cup will be his final appearance at the event, marking a record sixth participation. Yet, he has not addressed any plans for the European Championship.
Ronaldo is set to extend his lucrative deal in the Middle East until the summer of 2027, when he will be 42 years old, and there are no indications of his performance declining. He aims to reach 1,000 career goals after surpassing 950, being the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football with 143 goals.
Goals and Euro 2028: Will Ronaldo Achieve His Targets?
Nani stated, “He’ll reach 1,000 goals easily; it’s been a target for him for years. He wants to achieve 1,000 documented goals, different from players like Pelé or Romário whose tallies lack proper records. Cristiano could compile a film of his achievements and I have no doubt he will get there, potentially even playing in the lowest professional league, but that won’t be necessary.”
Nani praised Ronaldo’s remarkable longevity: “Cristiano has always been clear about his goals. That determination has made him one of the greatest players of all time. Even at 40, he surprises many, although I expected it.” He expressed hope that Ronaldo maintains his present level and becomes pivotal for Roberto Martinez at the World Cup.
Regarding Ronaldo’s participation in the upcoming European Championship, Nani remarked: “I hope he plays at the Euros, which will depend on his physical condition and motivation. However, if anyone can accomplish something extraordinary like competing in the Euros at 43, it’s Cristiano.”
Ronaldo Supported to Extend International Career with Portugal
Ronaldo notably contributed to Portugal winning the Euros in 2016 and adding two UEFA Nations League titles to his accolades. Former Manchester United teammate Wes Brown commented on Ronaldo’s prospects of continuing his international career beyond 2026, expressing: “If he can still contribute, why not select him? Even when the critics doubted his performance, he showed up and supported his younger teammates.”
He assured, “In his mind, he won’t be finished yet; he can still make contributions to the team, and he has the energy and belief to keep going in the sport.”
No Retirement Plan for Ronaldo
Ronaldo holds a record 226 caps for Portugal and expressed interest in playing alongside his son Cristiano Jr., whether at club or international levels, showing no signs of retirement plans anytime soon.
