Spring training has opened for each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams, so it’s fair to say it’s the baseball preseason. Still, there are potential trades and a few important free agents yet to be signed. Here’s the news and rumors for today.
Padres Seeking More Offensive Options
The Padres are “continuing to seek another bat via trade or free agency,” reports The San Diego Union-Tribune. Last season, the Padres ranked eighth in the majors for runs scored, but they lost several players during the offseason, including Jurickson Profar, Ha-Seong Kim, Kyle Higashioka, and Donovan Solano.
The Padres’ lineup still looks strong at the top with Luis Arraez, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, and Xander Bogaerts, but the bottom third raises concerns. They plan to have a platoon of Jason Heyward and Connor Joe in left field without a solid everyday designated hitter currently in place.
The best remaining free agents include Justin Turner and J.D. Martinez, while Nolan Arenado is available through trade from the Cardinals. However, the Padres may be looking for cheaper options.
Boone’s Contract Extension Likely to Happen Soon
The Yankees and manager Aaron Boone have been in discussion for a contract extension during much of the offseason. On January 28, owner Hal Steinbrenner hinted strongly that an extension for Boone was likely. On Friday, during spring training, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman mentioned that an official announcement about Boone’s extension could come before the start of the season in 2025.
Boone has managed the Yankees since 2018, leading them to three AL East titles and three ALCS appearances (2019, 2022, and 2024). He secured his first pennant last season but lost the World Series to the Dodgers (4-1).
D-backs Sign Graveman
The Diamondbacks secured free agent Kendall Graveman on a one-year, $1.35 million deal. The 34-year-old reliever missed the 2024 season due to shoulder surgery but is reportedly healthy as spring arrives. Last season, he posted a 3.12 ERA with 66 strikeouts over 66⅓ innings.
Guardians Sign Junis
The Guardians have inked versatile pitcher Jakob Junis to a one-year, $4.5 million deal. The 32-year-old right-hander pitched in various roles last season, achieving a 2.69 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 67 innings.
