After exploring opportunities for head coaching roles, Brian Flores has secured a new contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Flores, whose contract was nearing expiration, has served as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator for three years. He interviewed with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers for their head coaching positions. Should his candidacy not result in an offer, he will continue his role with the Vikings.
“Brian has a unique ability to connect with players, understand their skill sets, and put them in positions to maximize their impact on the field,” stated Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. “The identity of our defense is a reflection of his leadership and preparation. On a personal level, I have truly valued the relationship we have built over the past three years, and that shared trust, alignment and high standards will remain essential to our success.”
At 44 years old, Flores spent 15 years working under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots. He contributed to four Super Bowl victories with the team, including serving as the de facto defensive coordinator. His guidance was pivotal in the Patriots’ defense limiting the Rams to just three points in Super Bowl LIII.
Flores transitioned his success at New England into his first head coaching role with the Miami Dolphins at the start of the 2019 season. After a rough beginning, he turned the team’s performance around, leading them to win five of their final nine games. However, he was dismissed two years later despite leading Miami to consecutive winning seasons. Following his departure, he filed a lawsuit against the NFL, the Dolphins, the New York Giants, and the Denver Broncos alleging racial discrimination. Flores then spent a year as linebackers coach for the Steelers before joining the Vikings as their defensive coordinator.
He became part of O’Connell’s Minnesota staff before the 2023 season. In 2024, under Flores’ defense, the Vikings ranked fifth in the NFL for points allowed, achieving a record of 14-3 during the regular season. They allowed the seventh-fewest points in the league in 2025.
