The new year has brought back Scottie Scheffler, who, after missing the previous season’s American Express due to a hand injury, returned to Palm Springs ready to impress. He started his 2026 season brilliantly, scoring a 9-under 63 at La Quinta Country Club, placing him just one stroke behind both Min Woo Lee and Pierceson Coody, each carding 10-under 62 at the Nicklaus Tournament Course.
Scheffler’s performance marks his best round at this event in his six appearances as he aims for his first tournament title.
“You have to approach it mentally like you have to make some birdies… you can still get in some trouble. It’s still golf, it’s still quite difficult, believe it or not, even though the scores are low” - Scottie Scheffler
In a standout first nine, Scheffler recorded six 3’s and turned in a 30, while his back side saw him chip in for birdie on the 17th green.
With many competitors ready to challenge, including Jason Day, who also shone on the Stadium Course, the tournament looks promising as they all head toward competitive rounds ahead.
