Could Cristiano Ronaldo Be Set to Retire Following Possible Contract Extension Until 2027?

Cristiano Ronaldo's potential retirement is on the horizon as Saudi Pro League officials outline ambitious plans to recruit major football stars ahead of the 2034 World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement could be nearing as Saudi Pro League officials are reportedly planning to attract 50 renowned footballers to join him in the Middle East. High-profile names like Mohamed Salah and Bruno Fernandes are targeted to keep the league appealing leading up to the 2034 World Cup.

Ambitious Plans for the Saudi Pro League

According to talkSPORT, “dealmakers are aiming for 50 foreign signings at peak age this summer.” Activity is expected to ramp up following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.

While focusing on long-term players, there are also older stars on the radar. Liverpool’s Salah, Manchester United’s Fernandes, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, and Barcelona’s Lewandowski are all eyed.

Salah & Fernandes: Key Targets

Saudi officials have already shown interest in Salah after his public statements against Liverpool in December. Michael Emenalo, Saudi Arabia’s sporting director, has a close connection with Salah and is likely to spearhead any formal move. A previous bid of £150 million ($202 million) by Al-Ittihad for Salah was rejected in 2023 but circumstances may be different now.

Al-Ittihad is also considering a move for Fernandes, who has a €60 million release clause for non-Premier League clubs. He has hinted at seeking new challenges after this summer’s World Cup.

Ongoing interest surrounds other Premier League talents as well, including Aston Villa’s Tielemans and Onana, and Arsenal’s Martinelli, with Al-Nassr eager to strengthen.

Funding for Young Players

Meanwhile, Vinicius Junior is among the top targets outside of England, as Al-Ahli is prepared to funnel significant funds to secure him. Discussions between his representatives and Saudi officials have been ongoing for over a year, suggesting a transfer might be feasible.

Saudi clubs have been encouraged to utilize up to €2 billion per season for young player investments, as long as it pertains to transfer fees, commissions, and wages.

Ronaldo’s Future

Ronaldo is expected to part ways with Al Nassr by the summer of 2027, possibly leading to retirement. Even with a potential contract extension that will take him past 43, strategies are being devised to maintain global interest once the football star steps away from the pitch.
