Cristiano Ronaldo is missing from Al-Nassr’s lineup amid frustrations with the club’s management by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Ronaldo was not included when coach Jorge Jesus announced the roster to face Al-Riyadh, a decision made by the player in reaction to dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer dealings. Despite the window being open, Al-Nassr has not secured any new players, although efforts are underway to bolster the team before the end of the transfer period on Monday.
Ronaldo’s decision is reportedly supported by senior figures within Al-Nassr concerning the conflicts arising from one entity overseeing four of Saudi Arabia’s top clubs. Previous reports from CBS Sports have highlighted tensions among major clubs in the country, exacerbated last summer when Al-Hilal attempted to recruit Ronaldo for the Club World Cup.
The interest from Al-Hilal in acquiring Karim Benzema’s services could further complicate matters for Al-Nassr. Currently leading the league by three points, Al-Hilal’s potential player acquisition is seen as having significant implications for the championship race.
At 40 years old, Ronaldo still has approximately 18 months remaining on his agreement with Al-Nassr, and there has yet to be any indication that he intends to terminate his contract early. Instead, he hopes that his actions will encourage PIF to provide the necessary support for his team in the transfer market.
