Lionel Messi has not yet officially confirmed his spot for the 2026 World Cup. However, his coach at Inter Miami, Javier Mascherano, has hinted that the renowned eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient will likely be a part of Argentina’s plans.
Expectations have been that Messi, who led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, will showcase his talent in at least one more major tournament as the captain of his national team.
Messi’s World Cup Intentions Unclear
While currently playing for Inter Miami, Messi will have less competitive experience than European-based players when the tournament kicks off in North America this summer. He has indicated that not wanting to be a “burden” on Argentina if he is not fully fit could factor into his decision.
Mascherano’s Encouragement
Javier Mascherano, who played with Messi for both Barcelona and the Argentina national team, does not see any reason why Messi can’t return to defend the prestigious trophy, expressing optimism when asked if Messi could compete in a sixth World Cup.
Mascherano remarked that as he observes Messi closely daily, he understands the physical condition of the South American star.
Messi Aiming for More Records
As Messi aims to continue adding to his remarkable achievements, he stands as the all-time leader in World Cup appearances and is expected to further strengthen that record while also accumulating a staggering total of 196 international caps.
Previously, Messi expressed a desire to participate in the 2026 tournament, stating, “I hope I can be there. I’ve said before that I’d love to be there. If not, at least I will be cheering from the sidelines.”
Lastly, Messi confirmed he has signed a contract extension with Inter Miami through 2028, indicating that while his international future might be uncertain, he is committed to his club career.
