Sophie Cunningham Critiques WNBA as a 'Laughing Stock' Amid CBA Stalemate

The WNBA confronts significant challenges as Sophie Cunningham speaks out about the deadlock in negotiations with players ahead of the 2026 season.

The WNBA and its players’ association met recently for negotiations, but Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever expressed her frustration regarding the ongoing stalemate. With the 2026 season approaching, she highlighted the league’s poor image during this deadlock. Those involved in the NHL, NBA, and MLB have commented on the WNBA’s struggles, leading Cunningham to remark that the WNBA is currently perceived as the ’laughing stock of sports.’ She referred to the league’s negotiations as typical and frustrating, calling for investments similar to those in other leagues.

Cunningham stated, “This is a successful business. Why is the W not learning and leaning on people who are already building that type?” She noted the lack of new proposals from the league and indicated where some teams are more willing to invest in player-first strategies.

As the player compensation remains a sticking point, some progress has been noted on issues like maternity leave and travel, yet a resolution remains elusive. The WNBA has never faced a lockout in its history, and the need for a comprehensive agreement is more pressing than ever.
