Didier Deschamps has passionately defended Kylian Mbappé amidst ongoing criticism regarding his performance. Deschamps asserted that while the Real Madrid star may not cover an average of 11 kilometers per match, he embodies the qualities of a true captain on the pitch for Les Bleus.
Deschamps addresses work ethic concerns
The France manager stepped up to protect his star player from increasing scrutiny about his contributions to defensive play and running metrics. In recent weeks, both Spanish and French media have criticized Mbappé’s work rate. Deschamps, addressing reporters during a media festival, countered these claims.
Critics have pointed out Mbappé’s lesser metrics in terms of distance covered compared to his teammates, suggesting it signifies a lack of effort. However, Deschamps defended this by arguing that expecting high levels of running from a player like Mbappé restricts the natural explosiveness he brings to the game.
‘He doesn’t have the profile’ to run 11km
Deschamps criticized the unrealistic expectations placed on Mbappé’s physical capabilities, noting that the expectations of endurance running akin to that of a box-to-box midfielder do not align with Mbappé’s strengths as a forward known for rapid bursts of speed.
“That’s your analysis, but I don’t believe that’s the case, even if some players might run less than others. If you want him to cover at least 11 km per match, don’t bother, he won’t,” stated Deschamps.
A true captain within the team
Deschamps further dismantled the narrative of Mbappé as self-centered, providing insight into the respect and admiration he commands among younger teammates.
“You may like Kylian, you may not, but the younger players adore him,” Deschamps shared. “You have this image of him as a selfish, individualistic guy, but within the French national team, he acts as a true captain.”
Mbappé shines for club and country
Despite the criticism surrounding his playing style, Mbappé remains an undeniable force. Currently leading La Liga with 22 goals from 21 matches, he’s also found the net 13 times in just seven Champions League games. His remarkable performances continue as he has scored in his last six matches for the French national team, tallying eight goals during this period, which reassures Deschamps ahead of the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
