Expert Insights for Key College Basketball Matchups on February 7
Analysts weigh in on major college basketball contests, focusing on the Duke vs. North Carolina rivalry.
Every Friday leading to conference tournaments, I review the biggest college basketball games based on opening lines. This weekend features Duke renewing its rivalry with North Carolina, while BYU aims to halt a three-game losing streak against Houston.
Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels
Duke is favored by 5.5 points, total 152.5.
I expect many to bet on UNC as underdogs, but I find it hard to back them at this line. A close game is likely, but I would need at least +7 to support North Carolina. Duke’s offense holds a significant advantage over UNC’s defense, which may struggle to secure necessary stops late in the game.
Duke excels at free throws, which could matter if the spread tightens towards the end. Their main drawback is that they occasionally struggle with turnovers. In a previous matchup against Florida State, they committed 15 turnovers and only won by four.
Lean: Duke -5.5
Houston Cougars at BYU Cougars
Houston is favored by 2.5 points, total 148.5.
This game initially seemed like a clash between powerhouses, but BYU’s recent form has dwindled. They’ve lost four of their past five games, struggling defensively.
Houston has been blowing out teams and is my pick to win the national championship. While BYU’s scoring is impressive, I’m inclined to bet on the Over 148.5 points.
Lean: Over 148.5
Tennessee Volunteers at Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky is slightly favored at -1.5, total 144.5.
Both teams are experiencing strong runs, with Tennessee winning four straight and Kentucky going 7-1 recently. The first meeting was tightly contested, hinting at a similar trend.
Lean: Kentucky -1.5
Illinois Fighting Illini at Michigan State Spartans
Michigan State is favored by 1.5, total 143.5.
Despite distractions regarding a player’s status, I trust Coach Tom Izzo will prepare MSU adequately. Illinois has performed admirably on the road, but Michigan State possesses the defensive tools to succeed against them.
Lean: Michigan State ML -115
