Kiyan Anthony, son of NBA great Carmelo Anthony, sits out as Syracuse loses to Virginia
Kiyan Anthony, the freshman standout for Syracuse and son of NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, experienced his first game without playing time during their recent match against Virginia.
Freshman Kiyan Anthony, the son of Syracuse basketball legend Carmelo Anthony, logged a ‘Did Not Play’ (DNP) for the first time this season during the Orange’s 72-59 defeat against No. 18 Virginia. Throughout the ongoing season, Kiyan has averaged 8.9 points and 1.6 rebounds over 23 games (two of which he started), making him the leading scorer off the bench for the team.
Coach’s Decision
The decision for Anthony to sit out was made by Syracuse coach Adrian Autry, who emphasized that Kiyan’s absence did not stem from any injury. “It was my decision,” Autry stated. “This is a physical team, experienced team and it was just my decision. Nothing else. No injuries or anything like that. No narratives about any of this stuff. Again, I made a decision that was my decision today.”
Anthony’s inactivity came shortly after he played just 16 minutes against North Carolina, scoring 10 points, ranking fourth on the team behind Donnie Freeman, Naithan George, and J.J. Starling. The Syracuse team now holds a 13-11 record overall (4-7 in the ACC) and risks missing out on the NCAA Tournament for a fifth consecutive year.
