U.S. men’s national team midfielder Weston McKennie scored yet again for Juventus on Sunday, continuing a well-timed career-best goalscoring run ahead of this summer’s World Cup in North America.
McKennie nabbed Juventus’ first goal in a 2-2 draw against Lazio, kicking off his side’s comeback with a 59th-minute header that slashed the visitors’ lead in half. The play began as Kenan Yildiz made his way into the penalty area but looked to play a pass, spotting Manuel Locatelli making a central run into the box. Before he entered the area, Locatelli noticed McKennie in front of him and the American acted quickly to shoot, but the ball hit an opponent instead.
The ball drifted to McKennie’s right and fell to Juventus substitute Edon Zhegrova, who shot but his attempt was saved by Lazio’s goalkeeper Ivan Provedel. The ball rolled to McKennie’s left; he made a run towards it but wisely paused as it whizzed out of reach. Andrea Cambiaso then got to the ball at the end line, and aware of his teammate’s movement, McKennie stepped back before leaping in the air and flicking the ball into the back of the net with his head, enhancing the moment by kissing it off the post.

McKennie now has seven goals across all competitions for Juventus this season, officially marking it his best goalscoring season in his club career. He scored all of his goals after ex-Italy boss Luciano Spalletti took over as the team’s coach in November, with Spalletti’s tactical style giving McKennie a new attacking role that suits his abilities.
Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the USMNT, now has an additional option for finding goals as he aims to develop a more attack-focused team ahead of next summer’s World Cup on home soil. McKennie’s current form, however, presents complications concerning his national team position due to limited availability over the past year.
Juventus currently sits in fourth place, trailing 12 points behind Serie A leaders, amid a competitive struggle to earn a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
