Rick Pitino claims his 904th career win as St. John's defeats Xavier in a thrilling overtime match, marking a significant milestone.
St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing Roy Williams to secure the third position in the all-time wins list for men’s college basketball with 904 victories. The Red Storm triumphed over Xavier with a nail-biting score of 87-82 in overtime on Monday night.
Pitino’s journey to this landmark win included battling his son, Richard, who is coaching the Xavier team in his debut season. Notably, 123 of Pitino’s total victories have been officially vacated by the NCAA.
In the intense match, Tre Carroll contributed significantly to Xavier’s efforts, scoring 17 of his 21 points during the second half, while Zuby Ejiofor led St. John’s with 25 points, netting six crucial points in overtime.
This victory also adds to Pitino’s previous close win against Richard’s team, where St. John’s won 88-83.
