Jayson Tatum Advances in Achilles Rehabilitation with G League Practice

Jayson Tatum is making progress in his recovery from an Achilles injury by practicing with the Maine Celtics, signaling a potential return this season.

The Celtics announced on Monday that star forward Jayson Tatum has been assigned to the Maine Celtics, their G League affiliate, for practice in Boston.

Tatum will return to the NBA squad after completing the practice, which marks a significant advancement in his rehabilitation from a ruptured Achilles incurred during the playoffs last year. He has been engaging in individual training at the Celtics facility, but participating in team drills is a major step forward in his recovery process.

His participation in team activities leading up to the NBA All-Star break only increases speculation that the six-time All-Star could return before the end of the 2025-26 season. Previously, Tatum mentioned that he ‘wouldn’t rule out playing this year,’ but emphasized the importance of ensuring that he properly completes the rehab process without rushing back too soon.

Initially, it was believed that the 2025-26 season would be a wash for Boston following Tatum’s injury, prompting aggressive roster moves including trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis while letting Al Horford depart in free agency.

Despite moves to reduce salary at the trade deadline, the Celtics are presently tied for second place in the Eastern Conference with the New York Knicks at a record of 34-19. Jaylen Brown is performing at an All-NBA level, while other players have transitioned into significant roles, allowing Joe Mazzulla to rally the team for playoff contention.

Considering the Celtics’ current success, Tatum’s return seems increasingly plausible. Analysts previously dismissed his chances of playing this season due to the risk involved. However, with the East appearing more accessible and Boston positioned to potentially secure home-court advantage in at least the first round of the playoffs, Tatum’s return could elevate the team into serious title contention.

The decision regarding his return will hinge on ongoing evaluations of his physical response to increased court time and collaboration with the G League team over the following months. If he returns, the Celtics would prefer that he has some regular-season minutes before plunging directly into playoff intensity.

For now, he will continue practicing with the G League roster and complete the necessary steps before any decision is reached. Given his recovery timeline, returning this season remains a tangible possibility, which would enhance the playoff race in the East.
