Jose Mourinho Anticipated as Next Portugal Manager Post-2026 World Cup

Jose Mourinho is likely to take the helm of the Portugal national team after the 2026 World Cup concludes.

It is reported that Jose Mourinho is expected to be appointed as the manager of the Portugal national football team following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is preparing to target the current manager of Benfica once Roberto Martinez’s contract finishes after the tournament.

Will Mourinho Exit Benfica This Summer?

Mourinho returned to manage Benfica again in September under a two-year contract. However, reports suggest that the FPF is likely to attempt to recruit the 63-year-old for the international role once Martinez departs.

If Mourinho were to leave Benfica, Ruben Amorim, who was recently dismissed as Manchester United manager, is considered the leading candidate for the role since he is a former player of the club with a successful coaching record in Portugal.

“My Ambition is to Unify the Nation”

Mourinho has expressed his interest in international management since January of the previous year during his time at Fenerbahce in Turkey. He stated, “I want to play a European Championship or a World Cup and unite a country around a team, as I have already done many times with the clubs.”

In August, addressing rumors about the Brazil national team, he emphasized that he prioritizes the Portugal position: “My destiny, in terms of internationals, is to play in a World Cup with the Portuguese national team.” He noted a connection with other teams, like Brazil and England, but reaffirmed his desire to start his international career with Portugal.

Mixed Performance at Benfica

Benfica has experienced inconsistent results since welcoming Mourinho back, exiting domestic cup competitions and falling seven points behind Liga Portugal leaders FC Porto. Nonetheless, Mourinho led the team to a stunning comeback in the Champions League, where they reached the knockout stages by defeating Real Madrid 4-2, highlighted by an incredible last-minute goal by goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

Mourinho Addresses Real Madrid Speculation

Recent rumors have linked Mourinho with a return to Real Madrid, where Alvaro Arbeloa currently manages the team. Despite these speculations, he dismissed them, stating, “Don’t count on me for soap operas.” However, a matchup between Benfica and Real Madrid is scheduled, with the first leg occurring in Lisbon on February 17.
