World Cup Outlook: USA's MLS Players Are Determined to Stay Active

MLS players in the United States are taking proactive steps to prepare for the upcoming World Cup, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fitness and readiness.

There are three essential habits that Sebastian Berhalter follows to optimize his performance: a proper sleep regimen, engaging with literature (currently immersing in The Light We Give), and adhering closely to his personal training routine.

Berhalter meticulously tracks his training progress and recovery efforts, utilizing tools like a hyperbaric chamber and Normatec recovery boots at home to maintain optimal physical condition.

“I’m not claiming that these tools alone make a difference, but I do whatever I can to ensure my mental and physical well-being,” Berhalter mentioned in a pre-training conversation. “I enjoy spending time with friends, taking walks, and simply being myself.”

At just 24, Berhalter is among the MLS players anticipating selection for the 2026 World Cup, where Coach Mauricio Pochettino can bring 26 athletes. Approximately 17-20 of those on the roster will be overseas players, leaving limited spots for MLS representatives.

Berhalter and his fellow MLS players are taking every measure to ensure they are in peak condition ahead of their final evaluations and international games scheduled for March against Belgium and Portugal.

“The World Cup is slated to commence in March,” Pochettino remarked during a press briefing.

The competition for a World Cup spot is fierce, particularly for domestic players who have been in offseason since November and have only recently resumed training. However, players like Berhalter focus on regular fitness routines.

Collaboration with teammates during the offseason is common, as shown by Max Arfsten, who utilized his time off to refine his skills alongside friends while lifting weights.

Arfsten outlined, “With the North Star goal of participating in the World Cup, there’s no slack time to be had; delaying my return to training would only prolong my re-entry into peak form.”

Additionally, Tim Ream emphasized the importance of maintaining fitness even as the season approaches, having experienced the challenges of too much downtime, especially as he ages.

With the season fast approaching, these players are focused not only on physical readiness but also on fostering a ‘mental freshness’ that they believe may give them an advantage despite the unconventional schedule they face compared to their European counterparts.
