A new era of Pac-12 football is set to unfold this fall, with the conference revealing its 2026 schedule featuring an innovative “flex” week in Week 13. This format aims to notably impact the teams’ standings in the College Football Playoff (CFP).
The Pac-12 intends to use the flexibility of scheduling to enhance its competitive edge, as the league consists of just eight teams restricting each to seven conference games. This leaves room for a three-game non-conference schedule and an additional gap that will fulfill the flex matchups.
Every team will prepare for a rematch against a previously faced conference rival, which will be categorized as a non-conference encounter and not affect the overall league standings. This system was effectively trialed in the previous season.
Significance of Flex Week
The flex week is crafted to optimize chances for the Pac-12 teams to identify their paths to the CFP and strategically adjust schedules to improve playoff opportunities. If, for instance, Boise State ranks No. 15 in the CFP in November, the Pac-12 could arrange a favorable matchup to keep them undefeated, enhancing their national standing.
Moreover, if teams like Fresno State require a key victory to distinguish themselves, the chance of a competitive game with a stronger conference opponent could be arranged. Given the non-conference classification of the flex game, two top-performing teams losing in this week would not hinder their progression to the Pac-12 Championship.
Key Details of the Flex Week
While the scheduling for the flex week remains under the Pac-12’s discretion, they adhere to ensuring each team has at least six home games in the season. Notably, teams such as Colorado State and Washington State will always host their flex games.
The league has already projected matchups for Week 13 including:
- Boise State at Utah State
- Texas State at Colorado State
- San Diego State at Fresno State
- Oregon State at Washington State
These matchups are subject to change based on logistical considerations, particularly to avoid repeat travel for any team. The final matchups for the flex week must be confirmed by six days before the kickoff, establishing a deadline of November 22 for the announcements.
With these plans in place, the Pac-12 looks to solidify its status as a leading force in college football and make a substantial impact in the upcoming CFP.
