NWSL Trade Evaluations: Bethune and Hutton Move to Kansas City Current and Bay FC

A breakdown of the significant trades involving Croix Bethune and Claire Hutton, revealing their impact on the NWSL landscape as the new season approaches.

A pair of major trades were confirmed among NWSL teams on Wednesday, adding fascinating dynamics to the upcoming 2026 season and potentially the U.S. women’s national team.

Croix Bethune is joining the Kansas City Current from the Washington Spirit in a deal valued at approximately $1 million. This trade marks a new chapter for the 2024 NWSL Rookie of the Year as she prepares for her first complete season after recovering from a meniscus tear. Meanwhile, Bay FC secured USWNT midfielder Claire Hutton, paying $1.1 million to the Current. Both players are emerging talents in the league, now stepping into teams with significant ambitions as the start of the season approaches.

Both trades allow Bethune and Hutton enough time to adapt before USWNT head coach Emma Hayes makes roster choices for the upcoming Concacaf W Championship, the qualifier for next year’s World Cup. However, it raises questions, particularly about the Current’s capabilities in Hutton’s absence.

Bay FC

Bay FC has had a slow start since its debut in 2024, but acquiring Hutton presents a robust opportunity to elevate their competitiveness. Hutton, at just 20, is labeled as one of the nation’s top rising stars, seamlessly fitting into the professional demands and aiming to excel as a premier player in her position. Every global team would gain from her presence, and by securing her, Bay is showing serious intent ahead of Emma Coates’ inaugural season as head coach. While Hutton won’t solve all their challenges, she unquestionably provides the opportunity for advancement. Grade: A

Kansas City Current

Bethune’s attacking playstyle and her entertainment value are expected to benefit the Current considerably, particularly as she boasts nine goals and 15 assists in her first two professional seasons. She is set to pair effectively with Temwa Chawinga, who is returning from a severe hip adductor injury. Notably, Hutton’s departure is significant, and how the team will navigate that gap is still uncertain as they pursue trophies following a defining regular season in 2025. Grade: B

Washington Spirit

Bethune’s request for a trade reflects her aspiration to seek growth in a new environment, as noted by Haley Carter. While her departure is regrettable, the Spirit will now have substantial funds to manage their ongoing pursuits, particularly in seeking an NWSL Championship, a title that has evaded them. The precise use of these funds remains ambiguous, as NWSL salaries aren’t publicly known. However, investing in player retention will surely bolster team spirit as they gear up for a pivotal season.
