Chelsea Faces Persistent Challenges After Recent World Cup Victory

Chelsea aims for a Champions League spot as they navigate physical burdens post-Club World Cup triumph.

As Liam Rosenior steps into his new role at Chelsea, the focus is on long-term adjustments rather than quick fixes. His situation is not unlike that of previous midseason hires, but there is a unique challenge he must face: the ongoing repercussions of last summer’s Club World Cup victory.

Expectations are high following their victory at the FIFA tournament and UEFA Conference League last season under former coach Enzo Maresca. However, an immediate concern arises: the physical toll that the Club World Cup exerted on the Chelsea team. Since the start of the 2024-25 season, the team has had a packed schedule with minimal breaks. They claimed the Conference League title in Poland on May 28 before commencing their Club World Cup campaign in Atlanta on June 16. Following seven games, they secured the championship on July 13 and returned to London by August 17 for the new season. Although this successful U.S. trip occurred six months prior to Rosenior’s appointment, he acknowledges the tournament’s lingering effects.

“You have to try to freshen up the team mentally and physically,” he mentioned on Monday before their upcoming match against Leeds United, emphasizing the need to manage player rotations.

Rosenior has echoed this sentiment multiple times during his early weeks at Chelsea, especially after the 1-0 loss against Arsenal in the EFL Cup semifinals last week, where Cole Palmer found himself on the bench to manage his minutes during a challenging season filled with injuries. The priority now lies in securing a UEFA Champions League qualification.

Chelsea is progressing steadily towards a potential spot in the Champions League next season, thanks partly to England’s favorable UEFA coefficient ranking, which may provide an extra berth. Currently, Chelsea holds fifth place with a modest four-point advantage over Liverpool in sixth. With the squad back to near full fitness for their game against Leeds, who are eager to distance themselves from relegation, Rosenior must strategically utilize his players, especially as Reece James may miss the match due to illness.

Since Rosenior’s leadership, the team’s scoring has noticeably improved, averaging 2.4 goals—up from 1.9 under Maresca—while still needing refinement in their gameplay.

“When you have players of this caliber, they excel because they make wise decisions during play,” Rosenior stated. “Balancing an aggressive style with a congested schedule is a challenge I acknowledge as essential for the team’s future.”

His commitment to developing a cohesive unit continues as they adapt to these rigorous demands.
