As the friendly between Mexico and Portugal approaches, fears are surfacing regarding the progress of renovations at the historic Estadio Azteca, recently renamed Estadio Banorte.
While organizers project that the venue will be operational by March 28, doubts about the completion have emerged. Alternatives for hosting the match are being considered, especially if crucial construction phases fall behind schedule.
Concerns from Portuguese Media
The Portuguese press highlights a growing unease among the national team’s coaching staff and officials regarding whether the stadium can fulfill safety and logistical standards by the scheduled date. Reports suggest delays could lead FIFA to reconsider the match and even future World Cup events if renovation timelines are not adhered to.
This match will attract widespread attention, particularly if Cristiano Ronaldo participates, marking his first game in Mexico.
Confirmation of Renovation Delays
Amid the concerns, Emilio Azcárraga, acknowledged that while some phases of the remodeling may extend beyond the World Cup, the initial renovations will be completed ahead of the friendly.
Current Status
So far, FIFA and stadium officials have not altered the venue arrangements. The Mexico vs. Portugal friendly continues to be listed as planned, alongside the 2026 World Cup opener set for the same location.
Considering Other Venues
If needed, alternatives such as Estadio Akron, Estadio BBVA, and Estadio Olímpico Universitario have been proposed as potential backup venues should construction not meet expectations. As ticket demand rises and global focus remains on the stadium’s renovation progress, the next few weeks will determine if the legendary venue is ready or if a backup plan will be necessary.
