Neymar has openly shared thoughts about retiring from professional football after the 2026 World Cup, citing ongoing injury challenges. He aims to represent Brazil in the upcoming tournament but remains uncertain about his long-term future in the sport after recent setbacks.
In December 2025, Neymar underwent surgery for a persistent knee issue, adding to a history of injuries that have sidelined him for extended periods. Now 34, he is eager to regain full fitness and return to his best form with Santos, where he has recently extended his contract.
Retirement Speculation
Neymar has placed a strong emphasis on earning a return to the Brazilian national squad, having last featured for the team in October 2023. The decision about his future will hinge on his performance at the World Cup.
“I don’t know what the future holds for me. It’s possible that by December, I might want to retire. I live day by day. This year is critical, not just for Santos, but for the Brazilian national team and for my own future,” Neymar told CazeTV.
Commitment to Recovery
Neymar expressed confidence in his recovery process, saying, “I wanted to return at 100% this season, which is why I took time to rest. Santos has implemented an excellent plan for my come-back.”
As Brazil’s highest scorer with 79 goals and 128 caps since his debut in 2010, Neymar holds a critical role in upcoming national selections. Former World Cup champion Kleberson believes Neymar is essential for Brazil’s World Cup efforts, despite concerns about his fitness due to his injuries. “He needs to reach a solid fitness level and stay on the field, as no other player in Brazil compares to his talent,” he mentioned.
