How MLS Crafted a 30-Year Journey Toward the 2026 World Cup

An exploration of Major League Soccer's evolution from struggling during the early 2000s to thriving as it heads into its 31st season with global stars, reflecting on its preparation for the upcoming World Cup.

From nearly collapsing in the 2000s to gearing up for its 31st season, Major League Soccer (MLS) has transformed significantly. Once only a handful of teams, the league will showcase 30 teams this weekend, boasting international stars including Lionel Messi, who is set to influence the upcoming 2026 World Cup. MLS commissioner Don Garber remarked on this evolution during his league address, stating, “We’d love to say that [the World Cup is] the rocket fuel, but this jet has been running for 30 years, and it’s going to run for another 30.”

The 2026 World Cup, the first with 48 teams, promises to break records, building from the massive attendance seen in 1994’s event. Hosting cities will be prepared, with extensive facilities planned across North America to accommodate national teams.

Hunt Sports Group’s Clark Hunt expressed optimism, noting that Major League Soccer will gain international visibility as cities like Kansas City step into the spotlight during the tournament. With elevated infrastructure in place, teams hope to capitalize on the World Cup’s buzz and improve their foothold in the soccer community.

Garber and other leaders emphasized the importance of sustaining the excitement generated from the World Cup and integrating it into local fanbase expansions. The growth of player development programs reflects this spirit of advancement, with more youth engaged in the sport than ever before.

The journey towards the 2026 World Cup not only marks a time of reflection but also questions how far Major League Soccer has come since its inception, focusing on future growth and opportunities.
