Josh Sargent on Track for MLS Transfer as He Eyes World Cup Spot
Josh Sargent is making a significant MLS move to Toronto FC from Norwich City, aiming to secure his place in the USMNT for the upcoming World Cup.
Toronto FC has struck a deal to acquire American forward Josh Sargent from Norwich City, as reported by The Athletic. The transfer fee is approximately $22 million, one of the largest in MLS history and a record for Toronto FC. While Sargent hails from Missouri, he has yet to play in MLS; this move comes as he prepares to raise his family in North America.

Sargent’s departure from Norwich City was unusual, as he had informed manager Philippe Clement via text that he would not be available for an FA Cup match in January, leading to his placement in the U-23 team. Having made 156 appearances for Norwich, scoring 56 goals across both the Premier League and Championship, Sargent had drawn interest from Wolfsburg during the summer, but this MLS return seems the best option for him.
With aspirations for participation in his second World Cup, Sargent has not been called up since September 2025. USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino indicated that there is still a chance for players to return to the squad. If Sargent performs well in Toronto alongside Djordje Mihailovic, they could enhance their chances of winning games this season. Toronto, which hopes to improve after finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference last year, is set to begin the new season against FC Dallas.
