John Cena vs. AJ Styles was anticipated as a highlight of Cena’s retirement tour for many fans. Their match at WWE Crown Jewel is considered among the year’s best. However, it was initially planned for Cena to face Drew McIntyre instead.
Cena disclosed that the match with McIntyre was intended for WWE’s October pay-per-view but was altered after Cena mentioned AJ Styles on Twitter. The enthusiastic reaction to the tweet appeared to influence the change in match planning.
“I knew about it and kept working diligently, regardless of the circumstances. I couldn’t just tell Cena to mention me in a tweet,” McIntyre expressed during a CBS Sports event.
McIntyre remarked on the discouragement of not being chosen but also emphasized its importance in his career.
He stated, “I can’t dictate the creative direction. I made it clear that I wanted to be part of Cena’s tour to demonstrate my capabilities alongside the elite.”
Despite the shift, McIntyre maintained a positive outlook as he prepares to defend his WWE Championship at WrestleMania 42 on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
