As NFL free agency beckons, a notable player has entered the open market. Veteran pass rusher Michael Danna is now unattached following the Kansas City Chiefs’ decision to release him, freeing up $8.94 million in salary cap space. This move positions the Chiefs above the cap by $6.5 million.
Danna, who is 28 years old, was drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft and has spent all six seasons with the Chiefs. Over 87 regular season games, he accumulated 21.5 sacks, 194 tackles (including 25 tackles for loss), six forced fumbles, and one interception. In the playoffs, he recorded two sacks and recovered one fumble.
During the Chiefs’ impressive back-to-back championship runs in 2022 and 2023, Danna had his two most productive seasons. In 2022, despite only playing 13 games without a start, he achieved a career-high of 5.0 sacks. The subsequent season, he excelled, starting 16 regular season games and posting another career-best with 6.5 sacks. However, his last season proved to be less fruitful, as he managed just one sack and 25 tackles over 15 games, although he did achieve his first interception in a Week 8 game against the Washington Commanders.
Expect him to attract attention as teams seek to bolster their pass rushing capabilities.
